Accessibility

We want every educator and learner to be able to use our resources. Both this website and the digital timelines aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA.

What we’ve done

As of October 2026, we have:

• Tested every page of this website and every screen of the digital timelines with automated checks against WCAG 2.1 Levels A and AA, and fixed the issues found.
• Made every link, button, and form usable by keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator. Dialogs keep keyboard focus inside them, close with Escape, and return focus to where you were.
• Set text colors to a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against their backgrounds.
• Provided text alternatives for meaningful images, labels for every form field, and a clear heading structure.
• Built pages that reflow on small screens and when zoomed, and reduced animation for people who turn on their device’s “reduce motion” setting.

In the digital timelines, you can move between entries with the Previous and Next buttons or the arrow, Home, and End keys. Each entry’s location is given in text as well as on the map.

Known limitations

• 3D book previews: turning pages works with the Previous and Next buttons and the keyboard, but rotating the book requires a mouse or touch. If the 3D preview can’t run, the preview pages are shown as images instead.
• Embedded videos: videos are hosted on YouTube, so captions and the player controls depend on YouTube.
• QR codes and linked resources: QR codes on the print timelines lead to third-party videos and documents that we don’t control.
• Screen readers: we are completing hands-on testing with screen readers and will keep improving based on what we find.
